Eight scientists share one million US dollars from the GEMI Fund
The GEMI Fund is a global initiative by the Healthcare global business unit of The Linde Group in co-operation with Harvard Medical International, Boston USA and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm Sweden, which started in 2002 to support advanced innovations to prevent, treat and diagnose disease using medical and pharmaceutical gases. Every two years the GEMI Fund awards USD 1 million for research into Gas Enabled Medical Innovations (GEMI).
On 30 October, the GEMI Fund arranged a series of scientific seminars and a grant award ceremony to honour the 2007 GEMI Fund grantees. Previous events were held in Boston and in Stockholm, but this time Munich was the venue.
Healthcare has been identified as one of Linde’s future focus areas and before handing over the diplomas to the 2007 grantees, Professor Dr Wolfgang Reitzle spoke of the importance of Linde working together with leading academic institutions in this area and how the GEMI Fund gives us an opportunity to identify and support leading innovators.
The eight grantees - four from USA and the other four from Germany, Portugal and UK – were selected in strong competition with more than fifty other applicants. Their research creates the basis for future medicine. Some focus on dominating conditions such as stroke and heart disease affecting hundreds of millions in the industrial countries. Other research projects target more rare diseases such as cerebral malaria, still killing millions of children in the developing countries.
During the day the grantees from 2005 presented the results of their research to an audience of scientists, doctors and representatives from Linde. Also, the astronaut Christer Fuglesang from NASA and ESA gave a fascinating presentation of his walks in space in 2006.
Among the speakers as well as in the audience were some of the world’s most renowned scientists in the field of medical gases.
