Causes of sleep apnea
Normally, although sleeping breathing continues as usual, even though the upper airway muscles relax.
But in some cases (e.g. obesity is a risk factor), the muscles around the tongue and the uvula relax too much, fall back, thereby blocking the airway. This restricts or even obstructs normal breathing.
