How is sleep apnea diagnosed?
The severity of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome can be evaluated by polysomnography (PSG). During a PSG test, several body functions are registered and evaluated, such as: electrical activity of the brain, eye movement, heart rate, respiratory rate and effort, air flow and oxygen level in the blood.
An Apnea/Hypopnea Index (AHI) is then calculated per hour of sleep indicating how often breathing stopped during the night. These records allow a trained physician to diagnose - or rule out - sleep apnea among other sleep related disorders. Beyond a certain predefined limit of events (generally > 30), treatment should be prescribed to prevent these episodes of apnea or hypopnea.
