Effects of sleep apnea
Apnea limits the exchange of gases, causing the level of oxygen in the blood to decrease, and also increasing the carbon dioxide (CO
2
) level. If the CO
2
level reaches a critical limit, the brain alarms the body to wake up to restart conscious breathing, and patients wake up several times during night anxiously, and breathing deeply and loudly; therefore, apnea reduces the quality of sleep and leads sleep apnea patients to potentially suffer from a number of symptoms:
Snoring
Agitated, non-restful sleep
A tendency to fall asleep during the day (daytime sleepiness)
Difficulty to concentrate and loss of memory
Headaches on waking up
Frequent need to urinate at night (nocturia)
Libido problems
High blood pressure
Weight gain
Sleep apnea may, if left untreated, cause high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases. Due to the excessive day time sleepiness it can also imply job impairment and traffic accidents.
Fortunately, sleep apnea can be diagnosed and treated. There are several treatment options available.
