Factors which could aggravate OSAS and that should be avoided:
Overweight, sedatives (tranquilizers) and alcohol
When starting Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) treatment, the patient should be recommended to:
- Stop drinking alcohol and taking sedatives, which promote loss of muscle tone (myorelaxants)
- Take regular, moderate physical exercise, but not too late in the evening
- Follow a low-calorie diet if necessary
Some simple lifestyle rules to the patient
- Go to bed at a regular hours
- Follow a regular bedtime routine
- Make sure your bedding is comfortable
- Air your bedroom every day
- Avoid heavy evening meals, avoid also going to bed with a completely empty stomach
- Do not have a hot bath before going to bed
- Do not fall asleep in front of the television
- Do not drink alcoholic beverages prior to sleep
