How is sleep apnea treated?
Sleep therapy is the general term for any treatment for sleep related disorders such as sleep apnea. Depending on the results of the polysomnography, the physician will prescribe a certain treatment for sleep apnea. For mild cases, a behavioral therapy might be sufficient, but most OSAS patients are treated with sleep therapy, using either a CPAP or a BiLevel device.
90% of patients are successfully treated without any surgery. The most common treatment uses a mask, worn at night, to supply a constant airway pressure. A machine connected to this mask forces air into the airways to prevent them from collapsing so that the patient is able to breathe normally during sleep once again. To get the highest clinical benefits using CPAP or BiPAP, the patient should try using devices for at least 6 hours per night.
