Aerosol therapy for asthma treatment

As asthma symptoms are caused by restricted airways, it is best to treat the lungs in the most direct way possible. This can be achieved by aerosol therapy. Aerosol therapy is used to administer drugs (steroids, antibiotics and bronchodilators) in many respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

Asthma medication
In general, treatment of asthma can work on two levels:

Prevention of attacks and symptoms
Anti-inflammatory agents such as corticosteroids or leucotrine receptor antagonists are used to reduce the swelling and redness of the airways.

Relief of symptoms
Airway dilators cause the muscles around the airways to loosen up and make breathing easier. For this purpose, drugs such as beta 2-agonists or anticholinergic agents are often used.

Combination therapy
A combination of these two types of drugs is also possible, but difficult to dose.

Administration of medication
These drugs can be given by injection or taken orally. But the most effective way is by inhalation - aersol therapy - as the drugs reach the lungs directly and give immediate relief.

Inhalation methods include

  • Nebulizers
  • MDI (Metered Dose Inhaler)
  • MDI plus spacer (especially for children as use is easier)
  • Inhalation-Driven-Inhaler

For the treatment of asthma, Linde Gas Therapeutics is able to provide
  • medicinal air
  • medicinal oxygen
  • aerosol generators
  • hand-held nebulizers used for the delivery of aerosol therapies.
  • respiratory medications (in selected markets)

Asthma is often under-diagnosed and even if patients think they have their condition under control, constant monitoring and adjustment of medication is sometimes needed.
