Emergency care
In emergency care medicinal gases help to treat and to gain time for life saving procedures. Oxygen, for instance, is essential in all cases of hypoxia – this is valid for all situations regardless of the triggering mechanism. Medicinal gas mixtures, such as, for example, nitrous oxide/ oxygen for pain relief are effective tools for providing immediate help for patients. Some gases (such as nitrous oxide) have been present in hospitals for decades while others appeared just a few years ago. The underlying mechanisms of these gases have only recently been discovered – as was the case with nitric oxide. Most of the time these gases are effective in the background of more sophisticated therapeutic interventions, yet nevertheless they play an essential role in the success of those therapies.
