The CPAP is a device that supplies Continuous Positive Airway Pressure to the airway, thereby preventing them from collapsing and minimizing or eliminating the apneic symptoms. The CPAP blows the normal air of the room through a mask into the patient’s airway.

There are several variations of CPAP machines on the market, as well as accessories to fulfil the specific needs of each patient. As patients might experience a dry mouth while being connected to a CPAP, there are devices including a heated humidifier, which moistens the air blown into the patient’s airways. Some CPAPs have a memory function that can register the apneic periods of the patient during night, thereby serving as a monitoring instrument as well. Some masks cover the whole face, others are very small, so each patient can choose the one that fits best to his face and his sleeping habits. With the correctly fitted material, sleep therapy with a CPAP is not only be successful, but also more comfortable. However, CPAP is just a treatment, not a cure, so if the treatment is stopped, the symptoms will return.
